Cut catches Ervin by surprise
Kick returner say ‘things happen’; receiver claimed from waivers
The Texans cut running back Tyler Ervin, their primary kick returner for the past three seasons.
They claimed wide receiver DeAndre Carter off waivers from the Philadelphia Eagles.
Ervin's release comes as a surprise. He was averaging 25.3 yards per kickoff return and 8.3 yards per punt return.
“Yeah, it’s tough, but things happen,” Ervin said. “I loved it here. It was great. I’ve got a lot of things up in the air in the next few days. We'll see what happens.”
Asked what explanation he was given for his release, Ervin replied: “Not too much.”
Ervin had filled in capably as a slot receiver with Keke Coutee sidelined with a hamstring injury, catching three passes for 35 yards.
A former fourth-round draft pick from San Jose State, Ervin had consistently drawn praise from Texans coach Bill O'Brien.
He spent the majority of last season on injured reserve with a leg injury.
Ervin had just five runs for 15 yards and 14 catches for 91 yards during his Texans tenure.
Carter has two catches for 21 yards in seven games and one start this year.
