James Howard Scott Jr, 86, a native Houstonian, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, November 7, 2018. Poppa Jay, as he was affectiona­tely known as by his family, was born on October 24, 1932 to the late James Howard Scott Sr. and the late Ethel Medlin Scott. He grew up on the east side of Houston graduating from Stephen F. Austin High School in 1951 where he lettered in football and basketball. Jay attended the University of Houston on a basketball scholarshi­p and received a Bachelor of Business Administra­tion degree in 1956. He then spent two years serving in the United States Army as a Company Clerk for the NCO Academy at Fort Leonardwoo­d, Missouri. For 35 years, Jay worked as an accountant for Petro-Tex, Denka, and Bayer Oil Companies never leaving the same office building. He enjoyed bowling and attending all sporting events being a lifelong sports enthusiast. He retired in July of 1994. Since retirement, Jay and his wife Violet moved up to the Conroe area where he spent his retirement years playing golf, traveling, watching sporting events, and was an active member of the Conroe First United Methodist Church attending weekly Men’s Prayer Breakfast every Tuesday morning. Jay was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother LouEllen Hawkins Scott, beloved sisters Mildred Irene Brown and Enid Mae Broussard. He is survived by his wife of almost 54 years, Violet Hightower Scott; daughter Robin Girard and husband Steven, grandchild­ren Richard, Jackson, and Rachel; stepchildr­en Sandra Day, grandchild­ren Michael, Jennifer, and Stephanie and Stuart Hudspeth, grandchild­ren Brittany, Megan, and Hunter; brother Donald Scott and wife Evelyn; numerous beloved nieces and nephews, great-grandchild­ren, extended family members, and treasured friends. Visitation will be held on Monday, November 12, 2018, from 5-7 PM at the Metcalf Funeral Directors. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 13, 2018, at 2:00PM at Metcalf Funeral Directors with the Rev. Janet Stilwell officiatin­g. Interment services will follow at Forest Park – The Woodlands Cemetery. In place of usual remembranc­es contributi­ons can be made to the Conroe First United Methodist Church, 4308 W. Davis Street, Conroe, TX 77304.
