Rice handles Alabama A&M; UT gets past Louisiana-Monroe.

Ako Adams had a career-high 22 points and seven rebounds to help lead Rice to a 73-59 victory over Alabama A&M at Tudor Fieldhouse on Monday night.

Adams was 7-of-9 from the field, including 5-of-7 on 3-pointers. Also scoring in double figures for the Owls (2-1) were Robert Martin and Jack Williams, both of whom had 13 points.

Rice, which shot 56.8 percent from the field and held the Bulldogs (0-3) to 35.9-percent shooting, led 36-26 at halftime.

The Owls led by four with 5:47 remaining before Martin hit two free throws and connected on a 3-pointer to spark a six-point run. After the Bulldogs’ Brandon Miller scored, Chris Mullins drove through the lane for a layup with 2:21 left that began another six-point run for Rice, which held Alabama A&M scoreless the rest of the way.

IOWA ST. 85 TEXAS SOUTHERN 73

Marial Shayok scored a careerhigh 26 points, and freshman Talen Horton-Tucker had 26 as the Cyclones held off the Tigers at Ames, Iowa.

Nick Weiler-Babb posted 13 points with 13 rebounds for Iowa State (3-0).

Texas Southern (1-2), which won four of the last five Southweste­rn Athletic Conference titles and beat Baylor on the road in its opener, got as close as 38-33 late in the first half before back-to-back 3s by Horton-Tucker helped the Cyclones make it 48-35 at halftime.

Jeremy Combs led the Tigers with 16 points.

TEXAS 65 LOUISIANA-MONROE 55

Dylan Osetkowski had 12 points and 10 rebounds as the Longhorns used a 16-0 run midway through the second half to pull away from the Warhawks to win at Austin.

Elijah Mitrou-Long scored all of his nine points in the second half, and his 3-pointer started Texas’ big run. Osetkowski’s reverse layup and free throw put the Longhorns up by 10.

Kerwin Roach II led Texas with 13 points and six assists.

BAYLOR 91 PRAIRIE VIEW A&M 80

Jared Butler scored 22 points, and King McClure added 21 points with five 3-pointers as the Bears pulled away late to beat the Panthers at Waco.

Baylor (2-1), who opened their season last week with a loss to Texas Southern, another Southweste­rn Athletic Conference team, never trailed and led by as many as 16 points in the first half. But the lead was only 59-57 with 9½ minutes left before the Bears went on a 22-8 run.

Prairie View A&M (1-1) was led by Gary Blackston’s 18 points. Darius Williams added 16 points, and Gerard Andrus had 14 points and nine rebounds.

KANSAS 84, VERMONT 68

Lagerald Vick was 8-of-8 from beyond the 3-point arc and scored a career-high 32 points, and Udoka Azubuike added 23 points and 10 rebounds as the second-ranked Jayhawks had to work to put away the Catamounts at Lawrence, Kan.

Kansas (2-0), which was jumped by Duke in the latest Associated Press poll, led just 40-36 at halftime before two big runs allowed coach Bill Self to breathe easy.

NORTH CAROLINA 90 STANFORD 72

Kenny Williams scored 12 points after starting the season by missing his first 10 shots, and the No. 7 Tar Heels dominated the first half to beat the Cardinal at Chapel Hill, N.C.

Women TEXAS 54, NORTH TEXAS 54

Lashann Higgs scored 20 points to reach 1,000 in her career as the 11th-ranked Longhorns defeated the Mean Green at Denton in a game featuring a longtime coach and her mentor.

North Texas coach Jalie Mitchell played for North Texas when current Texas coach Karen Aston was an assistant at the school. Aston later served one year as the Mena Green’s head coach in 2011-12. Mitchell was as an assistant for Aston at North Texas (2011-12) and Texas (2012-15).
