No link found in incidents as officials scour campuses
A bomb threat forced the evacuation of Texas Southern University on Wednesday afternoon, but an “all clear” was later given.
The Houston Police Department’s 911 call center received a call around 1:30 p.m. about a possible bomb. The caller mentioned TSU, according to HPD.
Nearly 2,000 on-campus students, as well as faculty and staff members, were evacuated from the university’s academic buildings and dorms, forcing them onto the neighboring streets as police investigated.
After about three hours of the evacuation, police gave the “all clear,” according to a tweet from the university.
Just as investigators wrapped up the sweep of TSU on Wednesday, authorities in Grambling, La., reported a bomb threat to Grambling State University. Evening classes were canceled and administrative offices closed.
Both Grambling State University and TSU are historically black universities. Authorities, however, indicated that they were unaware of any tie between the two incidents.
In a statement on its website, Grambling said “evening classes are canclled due to a bomb threat to the University’s Grambling Hall building. GSU Police and local agencies are investigating.”
At TSU, freshman Lamarsay Austin was on his way to class when he was told of the threat on the Houston school.
“We had problems like this in high school sometimes,” he said as officers scoured the university across the street. “It was just threats. It’s never been a bomb.”
He said he wasn’t worried about the threat being real.
A college basketball game between the University of Houston and the University of Texas,Rio Grande Valley was played Wednesday evening on the TSU campus. UH has been playing their basketball games at TSU as crews work to completely the new Fertitta Center.
