Rice’s offense slips in loss at Texas St.

SAN MARCOS — Nijal Pearson made five 3-pointers and scored 25 points to help Texas State roll to a 74-60 victory over Rice on Wednesday night.

Pearson was 9-of-16 from the floor. Eric Terry added 11 points, and Tre’Larenz Nottingham had 10 for Texas State (6-1), which has won four in a row.

Chris Mullins scored 12 points and Quentin Millora-Brown had 10 for Rice (3-5). The freshmen duo combined for 8-of-13 shooting from the field while the rest of the team shot 11 of 40 (27.5 percent).

Tyus Battle scored 20 points, and Elijah Hughes added 18 to help the Orange upset the No. 16 Buckeyes in the Big Ten/ ACC Challenge at Columbus, Ohio.

Kyle Guy scored 18 points, and the No. 4 Cavaliers combined effective outside shooting with their usual stout defense to slip past the 24th-ranked Terrapins in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge at College Park, Md.

Charles Matthews had 21 points and seven rebounds, and the No. 7 Wolverines rolled to a victory over the No. 11 Tar Heels in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Trent Forrest forced a turnover with 16 seconds left and drove the lane to hit a pull-up jumper with 5.2 seconds left as the No. 15 Seminoles stormed back to beat the No. 19 Boilermake­rs in Tallahasse­e, Fla.

Marie Benson scored 14 points to lead UTSA (3-5).
