UH offensive coordinato­r Kendal Briles gets three-year contract extension.

Kendal Briles is staying at the University of Houston.

Briles, UH’s associate head coach/offensive coordinato­r who was a headcoachi­ng candidate at Texas State, received a three-year contract extension to remain with the Cougars.

Contract details were not immediatel­y available. Briles had one year left on his original deal that pays $400,000 annually.

UH also announced a new three-year deal for run game coordinato­r and offensive line coach Randy Clements. Both deals — which run through 2021 — are pending approval by the UH board of regents.

In Briles’ first season at UH, the Cougars had one of the most explosive offenses in the nation this season, ranking fourth in scoring (46.4) and seventh in total offense (528.6).

Texas State hires Spavital

Texas State has hired West Virginia offensive coordinato­r Jake Spavital as its next head coach.

Spavital succeeds Everett Withers, who was fired after winning just seven games in three seasons.

Spavital has been as assistant coach for 11 seasons, with previous stops at Oklahoma State, Houston and Texas A&M. He spent the last two seasons at West Virginia.

A&M assistant going to UNC

Mack Brown has poached Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher’s staff in bringing an old friend with him to North Carolina.

Aggies tight ends coach Tim Brewster is joining Brown in Chapel Hill, N.C., said 247Sports.com. Brewster worked for Brown, the former Texas coach who has replaced the fired Larry Fedora at North Carolina, both with the Tar Heels (1989-97) and then the Longhorns (1998-2001) as his tight ends coach.

Brewster, 58,is an avid recruiter. Fisher is expected to hire a replacemen­t relatively soon, with the early signing period Dec. 19-21.

Johnson resigns at Georgia Tech

Paul Johnson, the architect of a triple-option offense that was an anomaly among Power Five schools, announced his retirement after 11 seasons with Georgia Tech.

Johnson, 61, who also coached at Georgia Southern and Navy, compiled a career record of 82-59 at the Atlantic Coast Conference school, including eight bowl appearance­s and three trips to the league championsh­ip game. Georgia Tech won the ACC in 2009l.

Johnson is known for his option offense, which produced gaudy rushing statistics but was criticized for being out of touch with today's wide-open offensive schemes.

Brohm to stay with Purdue

Purdue coach Jeff Brohm intends to keep his job with the Boilermake­rs rather than take the head coaching job at Louisville.

Since Louisville fired Bobby Petrino 2½ weeks ago, speculatio­n had Brohm returning to his alma mater.

He is 13-12 in two seasons at Purdue with backto-back bowl trips.
