Ex-Chiefs RB Hunt goes unclaimed on waivers

-

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kareem Hunt went unclaimed on NFL waivers Monday, three days after a video was released that showed the star running back shoving and kicking a woman in an incident that ultimately led to his release by the Kansas City Chiefs.

Police did not charge Hunt with a crime, but the Chiefs released him for being untruthful with them about what happened during the February incident. Hunt currently is on the commissioner's exempt list and cannot play even if another team signs him. The NFL says it is continuing its investigation.

Also Monday, a police report surfaced in which a suburban Kansas City man told police that Hunt was among a group of men that assaulted him during a nightclub altercation in January. The incident happened Jan. 11 at Mosaic, a club in downtown Kansas City. The 38-year-old victim was treated at a hospital for a broken rib, broken nose and other injuries. But as was the case in the assault captured on a Cleveland hotel security camera, no criminal charges were filed in the case.

The Chiefs declined to comment on the January incident.

Hunt acknowledged he misled the Chiefs about the incident in Cleveland during a live interview with ESPN on Sunday. He also apologized to those that were affected by his actions.

“You can't really explain it. The video shows it,” Hunt said. “I was in the wrong, and I'm not that type of person. I'm really disappointed and embarrassed in myself.”

Hunt admitted he may have anger issues, and he said that “I've taken action to learn from this.” But when asked whether he had sought counseling, Hunt said he had not.

Odds and ends

San Francisco will be without leading rusher Matt Breida for at least a week because of an ankle injurye. Breida hurt himself in warmups before Sunday's 43-16 loss at Seattle. He tried to play through the injury but eventually couldn't and left the game. Breida finished the game with five carries for 6 yards and three catches for 51 yards. … Denver is holding out hope that cornerback Chris Harris Jr. can return from a broken right leg in a month, and that they will be in the playoffs to make it matter. “He's week to week, and he won't go to IR,” coach Vance Joseph said. Harris said he expects to return for the Los Angeles Chargers game in the regular-season finale on Dec. 30. “I always heal fast,” Harris said. … The Los Angeles Chargers released offensive tackle Joe Barksdale, who started 43 games for the team over four seasons. Barksdale started the opener against Kansas City before suffering a knee injury and missing the next five games. He then played in the next four but was declared out for Sunday's game at Pittsburgh for a non-injuryrelated reason. Barksdale has been in the league eight seasons. … Cleveland rookie cornerback Denzel Ward remains in concussion protocol after Sunday's loss at Houston. Ward wast injured in the first half and did not return. Interim coach Gregg Williams said Ward initially was checked for a neck “stinger” before he was evaluated for a head injury. Ward, the fourth overall pick in this year's draft, has three interceptions this season.
