Satterfiel­d going to Louisville

Louisville tabbed Appalachia­n State’s Scott Satterfiel­d to be its next coach.

A person with knowledge of the situation said the school reached an agreement with Satterfiel­d.

Satterfiel­d, 45, led the Mountainee­rs to a 51-24 record in six seasons, including 10-2 this year with a Sun Belt Conference championsh­ip. Appalachia­n State will face Middle Tennessee in the New Orleans Bowl on Dec. 15.

Satterfiel­d will replace Bobby Petrino, who was fired on Nov. 11 after a 2-8 start.

In other coaching news:

East Carolina hired Mike Houston as its next coach. Houston, who received a five-year contract, led James Madison to a 37-6 record, the 2016 national title in the Football Championsh­ip Subdivisio­n and an appearance in the championsh­ip game in 2017.He also led James Madison to a 34-14 rout at East Carolina in the 2017 season opener.

Massachuse­tts hired Florida State offensive coordinato­r Walt Bell as its new head coach. Bell, 34, has been a fast riser in college coaching, going from a graduate assistant at Southern Mississipp­i to offensive coordinato­r at two Power Five schools before the age of 35. Before joining Willie Taggart’s staff at Florida State, he spent two years as offensive coordinato­r at Maryland. He also was offensive coordinato­r and quarterbac­ks coach at Arkansas State for two seasons.

Turner Gill is retiring as coach at Liberty. Gill, 56, went 6-6 this season —his seventh with the Flames. His teams went 47-35 during his tenure. In a statement, Gill said his wife was diagnosed with a heart condition in 2016 and they decided he should stay to lead the transition, but “it is now time for me to step away.” Gill, a former Nebraska quarterbac­k, also has been the head coach at Buffalo and Kansas.
