WHERE TO SEE THE NOMINEES

- BY CARY DARLING | STAFF WRITER cary.darling@chron.com

It’s coming down to the wire for anyone wanting to catch all the major Academy Award nominees. Oscar Sunday is Feb. 24, just a handful of days away.

While some of these films are still in theaters, this coming week offers the chance to catch most of the major nominees on the big screen in one place before you make out your Oscar pool ballot.

Best Picture Film Festival: Select Regal theaters across the country are having a Best Picture Film Festival in which seven of the eight best picture nominees will be shown, beginning Friday and running through Feb. 24. The Houston area venue participating is Regal Edwards Marq’E 23.

The titles include “Black Panther,” “BlacKkKlansman,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “The Favourite,” “Green Book,” “A Star Is Born” and “Vice.” The one missing, of course, is “Roma,” a film that’s been caught in a tug of war between some of the major theater chains, such as Regal and AMC, and the film’s distributor, Netflix. (The chains don’t like the streaming service’s policy of streaming its films either day-and-date with theatrical release or very soon after.) So, for now, the only place to see “Roma” in Houston is on Netflix.

Passes for the festival are $35. For more information, go to regmovies.com/ promotions/best-picture -film-fest.

Best Picture Showcase: AMC is doing its own Oscars-palooza but it’s a more entertainingly grueling proposition, with the films all crammed in either two days (Saturday and Feb. 23) or a 24-hour marathon (Feb. 23). Thankfully, for all of the rear ends in southeast Texas, the closest theater going the 24-hour route is AMC NorthPark 15 in Dallas. The participating Houston locations — AMC Studio 30, AMC Gulf Pointe 30, AMC Willowbrook 24, AMC Katy Mills 20, AMC Fountains 18 — are taking the more sane, two-day option, with “The Favourite,” “BlacKkKlansman” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” showing Saturday and “Vice,” “Black Panther,” “A Star Is Born” and “Green Book” showing Feb. 23. Admission varies by location. For more information,

2019 Oscar Nominated Shorts (Documentary, Live Action and Animation): The 15 short films up in three categories are showing in three separate programs at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston through March 3, while AMC Studio 30 is showing the liveaction and animated shorts in two separate programs. $9 general admission for the MFAH. $9.19-$10.81 at AMC Studio 30.
