On the heels of consecutive 25plus point victories and a school record 15-game winning streak, the Rice women’s basketball team entered the Associated Press Top 25 for the first time in school history Monday.

The Owls (22-3 overall, 13-0 in Conference USA) are ranked No. 25 after receiving votes for three straight weeks.

“We just got ranked number 25 in the country, which is a huge honor. It’s nice to be recognized nationally,” senior Nicole Iademarco said. “We’ve put a lot of work into getting to this point, but we still have a lot of season left and a lot of goals we want to accomplish, so we’re not going to rest or get content with that.”

Last week, the Owls added blowout wins over Florida International and Florida Atlantic to their résumé. Their current winning streak is tied for the secondlongest active streak in the nation with Baylor — both trailing Oregon’s 17 straight wins.

Under coach Tina Langley, Rice has registered three consecutive 20-win seasons, collecting 67 wins along the way—the greatest stretch in program history. Undefeated through their conference season, the Owls are beating conference opponents by a 17.4-point margin. They’re currently ranked 10th in the nation in scoring defense.

“It’s really cool to just leave our mark and to create history here at Rice,” guard Erica Ogwumike said. “It’s nice to get Rice known basketball-wise, too. I think that’s also something we’re excited about, because Rice is a great, prestigious institution that’s known for a lot of things, so just to add on to that list is awesome.”

Ogwumike transferred to Rice from Pepperdine with her sister Olivia. Now that Rice is ranked, it means all four Ogwumike sisters have appeared in the Top 25 at some point in their careers. Older sisters Nneka and Chiney starred at Stanford.
