Prairie View A&M, TSU remain 1-2 in SWAC race

GRAMBLING, La. — Dennis Jones scored a season-high 23 points and Gary Blackston added 22 Monday night as Prairie View A&M held off Grambling State 92-87 to maintain first place in the Southweste­rn Athletic Conference.

The Panthers improved to 13-12 overall and 11-1 in the SWAC, two games ahead of Texas Southern.

The game was tied at 61 with 8:52 to play before Prairie View went on a 10-3 run to break it open. Blackston had seven points in the run.

TEXAS SOUTHERN 77 JACKSON STATE 65

Jeremy Combs was the picture of efficiency as he scored 33 points in Texas Southern’s win at Jackson State.

Combs shot only 10 times, hitting eight, but thrived at the free throw line by going 17 of 25. He also had 17 rebounds.

TSU (14-11, 9-3) stayed in second place in the SWAC by erasing a 12-point halftime deficit with a 54-point second half.

Jalyn Patterson added 17 points for TSU, which has won six in a row.

VIRGINIA 64, VIRGINIA TECH 58

Kyle Guy scored 23 points and the No. 3 Cavaliers pulled away in the second half to beat the No. 20 Hokies at Blacksburg, Va..

Ty Jerome added 16 points for Virginia, which swept the regular-season series with its state rival. Kerry Blackshear Jr. had 23 points and 13 rebounds for the Hokies.

KANSAS STATE 65 WEST VIRGINIA 51

Barry Brown scored 21 points and the No. 23 Wildcats beat the host Mountainee­rs to remain atop the Big 12 standings.

Kansas State (20-6, 10-3) won its fifth straight conference road game.

The Wildcats stayed on top of the Big 12 by bouncing back after their 78-64 loss to then-No. 23 Iowa State on Saturday. No. 12 Kansas and No. 14 Texas Tech remain one game back at 9-4.

OKLAHOMA STATE 68, TCU 61

At Stillwater, Okla., Thomas Dziagwa matched a career-high with 23 points, connecting on 6 of 11 3-pointers, to lead the Cowboys past the Horned Frogs, snapping a five-game losing streak.

Desmond Bane scored 19 points, while Alex Robinson contribute­d 19 points, five assists and four rebounds for TCU (17-9, 5-8), which lost its third in a row.

WISCONSIN 64, ILLINOIS 58

Brad Davison scored 18 points, Khalil Iverson added 16 and the No. 22 Badgers held off the Illini at Madison, Wis.

Women OREGON STATE 67, OREGON 62

Aleah Goodman had 22 points and the No. 12 Beavers snapped the No. 2 Ducks’ 17-game winning streak with a victory at Corvallis.

It was just the second loss of the season for the Ducks, who defeated the Beavers 77-68 on Friday in the first game of the rivalry series. Oregon was hampered by the loss of starter Ruthy Hebard in the first half with what appeared to be a right knee injury.

NOTRE DAME 95 NORTH CAROLINA STATE 72

Arike Ogunbowale scored 22 points and the No. 5 Fighting Irish took over with a dominating third quarter to beat the No. 9 Wolfpack at Raleigh, N.C.

Marina Mabrey added 21 points for Notre Dame, which led 41-36 at halftime and then scored 34 points in the third and made 14 of 21 shots. That included 15 fast-break points.

JACKSON STATE 73 TEXAS SOUTHERN 64

Niya Mitchell scored 22 points, but Texas Southern lost to hotshootin­g Jackson State at Jackson, Miss. Jackson State shot 57.1 percent.

GRAMBLING STATE 73 PRAIRIE VIEW A&M 57

Leading scorer Shala Dobbins was held to 10 points and hit only 2 of 8 from the field as the Panthers shot 33.9 percent in a loss at Grambling, La.
