What I’m drinking

- Dale Robertson

Who: Kelly Prohl, owner and wine buyer for Double Decanted

Background: Prohl, a New Englander who studied electrical engineering and spent two decades in the corporate world before deciding to chase her passion for wine, moved to Houston about a dozen years ago. Double Decanted is open by appointment only. Call 281-8261861 or email Prohl at kelly@doubledecanted.com.

What: 2014 Crosby Roamann Merlot, Oak Knoll District Napa Valley

Why: A single-vineyard wine from Jaeger Ranch in Oak Knoll, which is “one of the best growing sites for merlot in Napa Valley,” Prohl says, “because it’s on the south end and is cooler than other parts of the valley due to its proximity to San Pablo Bay. The cooler air and morning fog combine to create a longer growing season than other Napa AVAs, helping the wine retain its acidity and develop more complex flavors. It’s elegant, juicy, full of blackberry and raspberry fruit, well-balanced and immediately drinkable — an absolutely delicious New World ‘Bordeaux’ with subtle hints of Old World terroir. I love the perfume, and the finish will convince you this wine has earned its gold-medal distinction.” Indeed, it won Double Gold Class Champion honors in the 2019 Houston Rodeo Uncorked International Wine Competition.

Price: $45 through Double Decanted, 11311 Richmond, Suite L104
