Torres, Yankees thump Orioles
BALTIMORE — Gleyber Torres hit two of New York’s five home runs off Baltimore’s beleaguered pitching staff, and the New York Yankees survived a shaky outing from CC Sabathia in a 7-5 victory over the Orioles on Wednesday night.
Torres homered leading off the third and fifth innings to help New York take a 7-2 lead. He has four multihomer games this season — all against Baltimore — and has gone deep against the Orioles 10 times in 11 games.
CARDINALS, ROYALS SPLIT: Marcell Ozuna and Matt Carpenter went deep as part of a four-homer barrage, and host St. Louis split a doubleheader with Kansas City by winning the second game 10-3. Brad Keller threw seven-plus innings of two-hit baseball to snap a six-start winless streak, and Jorge Soler hit a three-run homer as the Royals beat the Cardinals 8-2 in the first game.
METS 6, NATIONALS 1: Juan Lagares hit a go-ahead, three-run double off Washington closer Sean Doolittle, Rajai Davis capped the six-run eighth inning with a three-run homer in his first at-bat for New York, and the Mets rallied to beat the visiting Nationals.
CUBS 8, PHILLIES 4: Cole Hamels struggled in his first start against his original team, Albert Almora Jr. hit his first career grand-slam, and Chicago rallied from an early three-run deficit with three homers, beating Philadelphia at Wrigley Field.
RAYS 8, DODGERS 1: Avisail Garcia and Kevin Kiermaier each hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning to power host Tampa Bay over Los Angeles.
ATHLETICS 7, INDIANS 2: Frankie Montas pitched six scoreless innings, Mark Canha homered and drove in three runs, and Oakland extended its winning streak to six games with a victory at Cleveland.
RANGERS 2, MARINERS 1: Hunter Pence homered, Adrian Sampson had another impressive long relief outing for a victory after not starting, and host Texas beat Seattle to complete a three-game sweep.
PADRES 5, DIAMONDBACKS 2:Eric Lauer pitched seven innings for his first win in seven starts as San Diego beat visiting Arizona to complete a three-game sweep.
MARLINS 6, TIGERS 3: Garrett Cooper hit his first major league homer in the sixth, leading a comeback as Miami won its fifth straight by beating host Detroit.
BREWERS 11, REDS 9: Yasmani Grandal homered during a big rally in the sixth inning, helping host Milwaukee outlast Cincinnati.
ROCKIES 9, PIRATES 3: Pittsburgh’s Josh Bell reached the Allegheny River on the fly for the second time in two weeks, the only notable blemish for Colorado in a win over the host Pirates.
RED SOX 6, BLUE JAYS 5: Michael Chavis hit a tiebreaking blast in the 13th, and Boston won at Toronto.
BRAVES 9, GIANTS 2: Freddie Freeman, Dansby Swanson and Austin Riley each homered, and Atlanta breezed to a win at San Francisco.
