- BY VALERIE SWEETEN

That gorgeous beach water is beckoning you to come and enjoy all the fun it has to offer.

Starting June 3, visitors can find both weekly overnight and day camps at Sea Star Base Galveston through Aug. 10. Campers will be introduced to an intense and engaging program packed full of marine and aquatic activities with STEM concepts integrated into each activity.

“Campers will be introduced to new aquatic adventures by spending time in each outdoor activity,” said Heather Faris, Marketing and Community Outreach director at Sea Star Base Galveston.

“Spending their days out in nature and on the water, campers will learn and explore what the shores and waterways of Offatts Bayou and Galveston Bay have to offer.”

Overnight campers’ evenings are packed with songs, games, learning opportunities and friendly competitions.

Various ages can participate at Sea Star Base Galveston. Day camps are for ages 8-17 with overnight camps are for ages 11-17. Swimming lessons ages start at 4 years old. There’s also Youth Sailing for ages 8-18, and fishing events starting at age 7.

All other events have age requirements that range “from 6 through 100 years old,” Faris said.

There’s also a variety of excursions available at SSBG such as Schooner Sunday, Private Dock Fishing, Baysmart Express field trips, The First Sail Experience, US Basic Keel Boat Class, Kayaking, Powerboat Handling and Adaptive Sailing.

“Sea Star Base Galveston is a youth-based non-profit organization. Our mission is providing outstanding marine and aquatic programs where youth can learn teamwork and leadership skills, self-reliance and confidence, maritime career pathways and independence of mind, body, and spirit. We would like to open our programs to all youth regardless of financial means, as we believe that the lessons learned at Sea Star Base Galveston, will last a lifetime,” said Faris.

Paddleboard, surf lessons

Other ways to be one with the environment are to try paddleboard or surf lessons.

At Southern Spears Surf Shop, visitors can schedule lessons in advance. Surf lessons are $50 for two hours. Standup paddle lesson rates will need to be confirmed.

Water conditions can affect lessons, so call ahead.

“For surf lessons, we prefer to have waves that aren’t too small or too big. Anyone from kids to adults are welcome,” said Adam Garrison with Southern Spears Surf Shop.
