Schlitterbahn Galveston Island introduces Infinity Racers thrill ride
For many Houston-area families, summertime comes with many planned visits to area waterparks in an effort to beat the heat while also enjoying some fun in the run.
As such, Schlitterbahn Galveston Island is introducing a new thrill ride called Infinity Racers for locals and tourists alike to try out.
Infinity Racers is a pair of space-themed, head-first mat slides as long as two space stations. Both of the racing slides are nearly fully enclosed the entire time (except for the loading and splash zones) with multicolored fiberglass to create unique lighting effects inside each slide. The park chose to add a space theme to the slides in honor of the men and women of NASA and the Johnson Space Center, which the park has close proximity to. Built by Schlitterbahn and WhiteWater West, the ride will be 75 feet tall and 696 feet long. Comprised of two slides, the Infinity Racers feature Orbiter, which will have rings of multicolored fiberglass and is deep space blue at the start, and Galaxy, which will have dashes of multicolored fiberglass and is “astronaut ice cream pink” at the start.
Infinity Racers is the brainchild of both Schlitterbahn Galveston Island’s general manager, Ron Sutula, and water slide designers at WhiteWater West, which also designed and built Schlitterbahn Galveston’s MASSIV, which is known for being the world’s tallest water coaster. The water slide will open in time to be part of the national celebration of the 50th anniversary of the lunar landing. The main goal of the slide’s engineers was to maximize slide time for guests. Riders will slide head-first on mats, racing along enclosed twists and turns over the park’s river system and cabana village until they slide down to the splash zone at the base, eight stories below.
“Infinity Racers is the first ride of its kind and will be eight-stories tall, allowing riders to see where they’re going rather than going feet first with their eyes closed,” said Winter Prosapio, corporate director of communications and government relations at Schlitterbahn Waterparks and Resorts. “The Galveston water park also has the most thrill rides of all of the Schlitterbahn parks, with five body slides to boot, so we encourage those who enjoy these kinds of rides to come check it out this summer.”
Schlitterbahn Galveston will be offering promotions via social media, including offering opportunities for people to be the first riders, and having the construction tracker on Instagram at @Bahn_e79, giving away free tickets every week until the ride opens, which is currently slated to be early June.
