Tanigawa wins Senior PGA title
Ken Tanigawa overcame a three-shot deficit on the back nine to pass defending champion Paul Broadhurst and win the Senior PGA Championship at Pittsford, N.Y., for his first tour victory.
In only his second year on the senior tour and some 15 years after giving up playing professionally, Tanigawa shot an even-par 70 to finish at 3-under 277 at Oak Hill Country Club’s East Course. The 51-yearold held off PGA Tour Champions money leader Scott McCarron (70) to win by a stroke.
Broadhurst began the day with a two-shot lead but had a 75 to finish third at 1 under.
In other news:
• Bronte Law shot a 3-under 67 and held off a series of challengers to win the Pure Silk Championship by two shots for her first career victory on the LPGA Tour. The 24-yearold Englishwoman, a former star at UCLA, held a share of the lead after all four rounds and finished with a 17-under 267 total on the River Course at the Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, Va. Madelene Sagstrom (66), Brooke Henderson (68) and thirdround co-leader Nasa Hataoka (69) tied for second.
• Texas is tied for second and Texas A&M is seventh after three rounds of stroke play at the NCAA men’s championships at Fayetteville, Ark. The Longhorns, who had a 289 total in the third round, are tied with Stanford at 13-over 877, which is 25 shots behind leader Oklahoma State. The Aggies are at 884 after a third-round 301. SMU (292-893) is ninth, and TCU (288-894) is 10th. The top 15 teams advance to matchplay competition that will determine the overall team champion. Texas A&M’s Walker Lee (73-218) is tied for 15th, and Texas’ Parker Coody (75-219) is tied for 19th. Oklahoma State’s Matthew Wolff (70-209) and Austin Eckroat (73-211) are first and second.
