2 children critical after found in water

-

Two children in Katy were rushed to area hospitals on Monday after being found unconscious in a backyard pool and hot tub during separate Memorial Day incidents in Harris County.

A toddler girl eager to go swimming in her friend’s pool was first to be taken to the hospital in “extremely critical” condition after being found unconscious in the water, according to authorities.

Deputies were called to the home in the 4900 block of Windcross Court around 5:30 p.m. and found the 2-year-old girl “unresponsive.”

The child and her friend went into the pool unattended as their mothers were inside getting their towels, Lt. Kim Fonville said at the home.

“The children were excited about getting to go swimming,” Fonville said.

The other child, who lived at the home with her mother and grandmother, saw the girl struggling in the water and ran inside to tell the mothers, Fonville continued. The children were believed to have been left alone for about three minutes.

“They immediately ran downstairs, removed the child from the pool and started performing CPR,” Fonville said.

A second child, either 1 or 2, was later found unconscious during a pool party in the 3500 block of Paintbrush Dawn Court, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in a tweet. The adults “lost sight” of the child in a hot tub next to a pool. The child “went under for an unknown amount of time,” the sheriff said.

Both children were taken to Texas Children’s Hospital in critical condition.
