CINCINNATI REDS

Scooter Gennett has rejoined the team after missing all season with a severe groin injury suffered during a spring training game.

Gennett was in the lineup Friday at second base for the opening game of a series against the Cubs.

The Reds have desperatel­y missed Gennett, who was their most productive hitter the last two seasons. Cincinnati is last in the NL Central with one of the league's least-productive offenses.

Gennett had 50 homers and 189 RBIs in the last two seasons. He was an All-Star for the first time last year, when he finished second to Milwaukee's Christian Yelich for the batting title at .310.

The Reds also placed catcher Tucker Barnhart on the injured list with a strained oblique.

CHICAGO WHITE SOX

The ball club placed shortstop Tim Anderson the 10-day injured list with a right high ankle sprain and designated first baseman/ designated hitter Yonder Alonso for assignment.

Chicago also recalled outfielder Daniel Palka and purchased the contract of left-hander pitcher Ross Detwiler from Class AAA Charlotte.

Anderson, who is hitting .317 with 11 homers and 37 RBIs in a breakout season, suffered the injury fielding a grounder in a 6-3 loss Tuesday at Boston. General manager Rick Hahn expects Anderson to miss four to six weeks.

MILWAUKEE BREWERS

The teammade a flurry of roster moves before Friday night's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, including recalling top prospect Keston Hiura and sending down veteran Travis Shaw.

Hiura hit .281 with 5 home runs and 9 RBIs in a brief stint with the Brewers last month. He has a .329 batting average with 19 home runs and 46 RBIs for Class AAA San Antonio.

Milwaukee optioned Shaw to San Antonio while utility player Hernan Perez, a popular clubhouse figure with the third-longest tenure on the team, was designated for assignment.

TEXAS RANGERS

The club claimed right-hander Jesse Biddle off waivers from Seattle and unconditio­nally released left-hander Drew Smyly after he cleared waivers.

Biddle will be added to the active roster when he reports.

WASHINGTON NATIONALS

The ball club activated first baseman Ryan Zimmerman and option outfielder Michael A. Taylor to Class AAA Fresno ahead of Friday night's series opener in Detroit.

Zimmerman returns after a lengthy rehab from plantar fasciitis, which landed him on the 10-day injured list retroactiv­e to April 26.
