Friendswood hiker dies at Big Bend

A 54-year-old man from Friendswood died Tuesday while hiking amid sweltering heat in Big Bend National Park, according to officials.

The body of Richard Merrill was found a quarter-mile from the Marufo Vega Trail he had been hiking on. Authorities found his car parked at the trailhead, as well as a note that detailed his plans to hike from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., according to a National Park Services news release.

Searchers waited for safer temperatures before setting off to find him. He was found that evening with two liters of water and a full bottle of Gatorade, said Jennette Jurado, a park ranger.

Temperatures in the nearby Rio Grande Village were 90 degrees with 38 percent humidity by 10 a.m. on the day of Merrill’s hike. The humidity dropped and the temperature skyrocketed to 106 degrees by late afternoon.

“Under these conditions, a hiker will lose more moisture to sweat and evaporation than can be replenished by drinking and can quickly become dehydrated and experience heat illness,” officials said.
