Red Sox’s rout of Yanks sets record

-

BOSTON — Xander Bogaerts hit a three-run homer in a seven-run first inning, then added a solo shot in the eighth as the Boston Red Sox put a historic pounding on the AL East-leading Yankees, beating New York 19-3 on Thursday night in the opener of their fourgame series.

The 19 runs were the most scored by the Red Sox against the Yankees in the 117-year history of the rivalry.

Bogaerts had four hits, and Andrew Benintendi and Jackie Bradley Jr. had three apiece. Bradley, Michael Chavis and J.D. Martinez each had two of Boston’s 10 doubles.

In perhaps the worst-ever start by a Yankees pitcher against the Red Sox, Masahiro Tanaka (7-6) allowed 12 runs on 12 hits and three walks while striking out four in 31⁄3 innings. It was the most earned runs ever allowed by a Yankees pitcher against Boston since the earned run became an official stat in 1913.

TWINS 10, WHITE SOX 3: Minnesota slugger Nelson Cruz homered three times in the first five innings at Chicago. Cruz hit a solo drive in the first, a two-run shot in the third and another two-run homer in the fifth. It’s the first career three-homer game for the six-time All-Star, who has 385 home runs in his career. Twins starter José Berrios (9-5) gave up three runs in seven innings to pick up the win. Max Kepler contributed a two-run homer and Miguel Sanó added a solo shot for Minnesota.

RANGERS 11, ATHLETICS 3: Danny Santana had a grand slam and drove in six runs to lead Texas to a win at Oakland.

CARDINALS 6, PIRATES 3: Paul Goldschmidt’s power streak helped lift St. Louis into a share of the NL Central lead for the first time since early May. Goldschmidt homered in his career-high fourth straight game, lifting the Cardinals at Pittsburgh for a four-game sweep of the Pirates. St. Louis won for the eighth time in nine games and at 55-47 tied the idle Chicago Cubs for first.

INDIANS 5, ROYALS 4 (14): Jose Ramirez hit a home run in the 14th inning and Jake Bauers added an rbi single to lift Cleveland to a win at Kansas City.

MARINERS 10, TIGERS 2: Tim Beckham hit a grand slam and Daniel Vogelbach drove in three runs to lead host Seattle.

ROCKIES 8, NATIONALS 7: Washington ace Max Scherzer lasted five innings in his return from the injured list, and visiting Colorado outlasted the Nationals. Scherzer had been sidelined by inflammation under his right shoulder. He was 7-0 with an 0.87 ERA in his last seven starts, but struggled at times with his command in his first start since July 6.

METS 4, PADRES 0: Jacob deGrom pitched seven innings of four-hit ball and host New York blanked San Diego. DeGrom (6-7) struck out nine and walked one, extending his scoreless streak to 17 innings.
