His win last Wednesday was his 217th, tying him with Mickey Lolich and Freddie Fitzsimmons for 83rd place. With his next one, he’ll catch Bob Caruthers and Earl Whitehill, who share 81st place. … In 11 starts since June 1, Cole is 7-0 with a 1.88 ERA and 100 strikeouts in 72 innings. Opponents are 0-for-27 against him in the seventh inning this season. He has allowed just two walks in that inning while striking out 17. … Astros pitchers lead the majors in strikeouts (1,084) and have allowed the fifth-fewest walks (302).

The Indians lead the wild-card race by three games over Oakland. … After hitting a putrid .214 through June, third baseman Jose Ramirez has caught fire this month. He’s slashing .344/.364/.731 in July with nine homers, nine doubles and 25 RBIs. … Carlos Santana’s .403 on-base percentage ranks second in the AL behind Mike Trout (.440), and his .926 OPS is tops among AL first basemen. … With an OPS of .876, Francisco Lindor ranks third in the majors among shortstops, trailing only Xander Bogaerts (.974) and Trevor Story (.892). … Bieber, who made this year’s AL All-Star team, is coming off a 4-0 blanking of Toronto, his second shutout of the season.
