Red Sox slammed as slide continues

NEW YORK — Gleyber Torres hit a first-inning grand slam, lefthander James Paxton cruised after that and the New York Yankees three-hit the Boston Red Sox in a 4-2 victory Friday night.

Boston has lost five straight for the first time since 2015 and dropped 11½ games behind first-place New York in the AL East.

Red Sox slugger J.D. Martinez hit a two-run homer during yet another rocky first inning by Paxton, but Torres bailed him out with his slam off Eduardo Rodriguez (13-5). Paxton (6-6) struck out the side in the second and completed six innings on 100 pitches.

CUBS 6, BREWERS 2: Javier Baez homered and drove in three runs, and Chicago won at home. Jose Quintana pitched solidly into the seventh inning and Jason Heyward also went deep to help Chicago move within one-half game of first-place St. Louis in the NL Central.

RANGERS 5, TIGERS 4: Lance Lynn struck out 10 in seven innings and tied Houston’s Justin Verlander and Washington’s Stephen Strasburg for the major league lead in wins. Lynn (14-6) allowed four hits, only one past the first inning.

PADRES 5, DODGERS 2: Eric Lauer pitched six strong innings and Josh Naylor had a two-run double in San Diego’s win at Los Angeles. Cody Bellinger homered for the Dodgers, his 36th of the season and 100th of his career.

INDIANS 7, ANGELS 3: Yasiel Puig drove in his first two runs since being acquired in a blockbuste­r trade and Cleveland won at home. Indians starter Mike Clevinger won his fifth straight decision

REDS 5, BRAVES 2: Joey Votto had three RBIs and homered, Alex Wood was tough for 62 ⁄3 innings and Cincinnati won at Atlanta.

NATIONALS 3, DIAMONDBAC­KS 0: Joe Ross and four relievers combined on a one-hitter and Juan Soto homered as Washington won at Phoenix.Ross went 51⁄3 innings, allowing a single and five walks.

TWINS 11, ROYALS 9: Nelson Cruz homered and drove in five runs to help host Minnesota beat Kansas City. Max Kepler, Jorge Polanco and Eddie Rosario each had two hits for the Twins.

WHITE SOX 4, PHILLIES 3 (15): Jose Abreu’s rbi single in the 15th inning broke a tie game as Chicago won at Philadelph­ia. Abreu also contribute­d a two-run home run.

BLUE JAYS 5, ORIOLES 2: Freddy Galvis had three hits, including a home run and Toronto won at Baltimore for its fifth straight victory.

ROCKIES 5, GIANTS 4: Ryan McMahon had three hits, including a home run, and Trevor Story also homered as Colorado won at home.

PIRATES 8, METS 4: Starling Marte’s three-run homer in the seventh broke open a tight game and host Pittsburgh snapped New York’s seven-game win streak.
