MINOR LEAGUERS SUSPENDED
Two players in the Detroit Tigers system and two other minor leaguers have been suspended after testing positive for banned substances. The commissioner’s office made the announcement Wednesday.
Nationals pitcher Steven Fuentes, with Class AA Harrisburg, was suspended 50 games after testing positive for Heptaminol, a stimulant. Detroit SS Pavin Parks, with the rookie-level Gulf Coast League Tigers, was suspended 52 games for a positive test for Trenbolone, a performance-enhancing substance.
Tigers 1B Reynaldo Rivera, with Class A West Michigan, was penalized 80 games after a positive test for Trenbolone. Cincinnati OF Nate Scantlin, with rookie-level Billings of the Pioneer League, was banned 100 games after his third positive test for a drug of abuse.
ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS
Reliever Greg Holland, a three-time All-Star who led the National League in saves in 2017 with 41, was designated for assignment by the club.
Holland is 1-2 with a 4.54 earned run average in 40 games. He has 17 saves in 22 chances, but saw his ERA climb from 2.33 at the end of June to its current number.
BOSTON RED SOX
The club said 2B Dustin Pedroia had knee joint preservation surgery in Colorado on Tuesday. Pedroia, who has played only six games this season, will begin his rehabilitation in Arizona, and it’s uncertain whether the 2008 AL MVP will ever again play in the majors.
CHICAGO CUBS
The team signed C Jonathan Lucroy. He was designated for assignment by the Angels on Friday, then cleared waivers and was unconditionally released Wednesday.
