New QB, same old Katy
Katy’s district slate might be glossed over by some considering the Tigers’ dominance has lasted so long (it reached 69 consecutive district wins after Friday’s 45-3 win over Morton Ranch).
This week was different with Jacob Bernard filling in at quarterback. He’s in place of starter Bronson McClelland, who is sitting out for two games following last week’s release of a video of him uttering a racial slur. McClelland also lost his captaincy.
Bernard opened the game with a touchdown run, and the Tigers ho-hummed its way to 6-0. Katy plays Seven Lakes next week.
Unforgettable week for Huntsville
It’s been an eventful week for the Huntsville football program.
Montgomery forfeited its Friday game against Huntsville earlier this week in light of the team’s recent hazing scandal. It left Huntsville’s varsity team without an opponent and an extra bye week, but the junior varsity and freshman teams’ games against its Montgomery counterparts were still scheduled.
On Thursday, however, a bus carrying the Huntsville freshman team on the way to Montgomery crashed at FM 149 and Bethel Road near Richards, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. No serious injuries were reported.
As far as the Montgomery varsity team’s next game is concerned, it’s scheduled for next Friday at home against Cleveland. Huntsville will host Lamar Consolidated.
Memorial wins again to boost playoff hopes
Memorial defeated Spring Branch ISD rival Stratford 31-3 on Thursday to improve to 2-2 in District 17-6A. The Mustangs opened league play at 0-2.
Maybe it’s a little-known fact, but Memorial hasn’t made the playoffs nor has it won more than three games since 2015, which might surprise some who remember the Boomer White days. Memorial is in line to break the drought.
Consolidated battle set for Saturday
The mid-season games with huge postseason implications are starting to pop up on the schedule. A&M Consolidated travels to Traylor Stadium on Saturday to face Lamar Consolidated.
Both teams are 5-0. A&M Consolidated is more of a known commodity here while Lamar Consolidated is riding the wave of winning that might remind fans of the era of electrifying brothers Jacquizz and James Rodgers. Speaking of that, Lamar Consolidated hasn’t won a district title since 2008 — the last in a string of four consecutive district titles with 2007’s 13-win and state title campaign sandwiched in-between.
Humble rallies to beat Summer Creek
Dexter Wyble hit Dontee McCray for a 26-yard touchdown with 3:08 left in the game, and Humble defeated Summer Creek 34-30 for its sixth win, its most under coach Charles West. The Wildcats ended a six-game losing streak to Summer Creek. West earned his first win over Summer Creek, too.
Needville reaches 3-0 in District 13-4A
Needville got the best of Columbia in a District 13-4A Division I showdown, winning 34-17. The district is interesting now with Needville, 3-0 in league play, at the top, Sealy off last week’s loss to Brazosport, and Fulshear on the board with Friday’s win over Bay City.
