HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Boys Christian Lee, Friendswood Notable: The North Texas commitment caught nine passes for 127 yards and two touchdowns and added a rushing touchdown in a 45-21 win over Terry to clinch a playoff spot for the Mustangs.
What coach Robert Koopman said: “Christian is a big, athletic receiver that has come back from injury and been a gamechanger ever since.”
Other nominees Dylan Ford, Morton Ranch: Ford amassed 14 tackles (11 solo), a sack and a forced fumble as the Mavericks stopped Seven Lakes 10-7 to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Ryan Schoppe, La Porte: A time of 14:59.20 at the Region III-6A championships won a gold medal for one of the state’s top runners. Israel Viser, Washington: In addition to 145 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns on 13 touches, Visor returned kicks of 80 and 72 yards as the Eagles earned their first win, 44-6 against Scarborough.
Girls Avery Clover, Atascocita Notable: The junior will go to her third state cross country meet, this time as a regional champion. Her time of 18 minutes, 24.5 seconds in the Class 6A Region III championships won by 31 seconds.
What coach Todd Symons said: “She works extremely hard. She loves running. She makes it fun. . She has a chance to win state. There’s a lot of good competition, but she’s going to come out and run as hard as she can.”
Other nominees Libby Hancock, East Bernard: Hancock finished sixth in Region III-3A with a two-mile time of 12:55.6, leading the Brahmas to the team championship and a place at the state meet.
Peyton McQuillan, Magnolia West: The senior is headed to the state cross country meet for a fourth time after a mark of 19:03.50 in the Region III-5A meet. It was good for second place, the highest Houston-area finish in 5A.
Addison Stevenson, Tompkins: Stevenson was the Region III-6A runnerup with a 5-kilometer time of 18:55.5, leading the Falcons to second place and state qualification.
