Haskins named Washington QB

-

ASHBURN, Va. — During his news conference Monday, Washington interim coach Bill Callahan named rookie Dwayne Haskins the team's starting quarterback for the rest of the 2019 season. Washington also will have running back Derrius Guice available for just the second game of his young career after his return from a knee injury that landed him on injured reserve.

Sunday will mark the first time the duo has played a game together.

Callahan offered praise for the way Haskins played during his first start while also acknowledging that the team's 1-8 record makes the timing right for the first-year passer to get valuable game experience.

Callaway benched only one game

Browns coach Freddie Kitchens said wide receiver Antonio Callaway’s benching was a one-game punishment.

Callaway didn’t play in

Sunday’s 19-16 victory over the Buffalo Bills after being a surprising healthy scratch despite quarterback Baker Mayfield saying the receiver had been included in the game plan.

Kitchens did not divulge his reasons for sitting Callaway, who was suspended four games earlier this season by the NFL for violating the league’s drug policy.

Eagles officially sign Matthews

The Eagles reached out to Jordan Matthews after DeSean Jackson was placed on injured reserve last week and officially signed the 27-year-old wide receiver Monday. It’s his third stint with the team that selected him in the second round of the 2014 draft.

He averaged 75 receptions and 891 yards receiving in his first three seasons with the Eagles and had 19 TD catches.

Odds and ends

Charles Rogers, a sensational wide receiver at Michigan State who became one of the biggest NFL draft busts of all time, has died at the age of 38, according to tweets from friends and a statement by the Detroit Lions, the team that selected him with the No. 2 pick of the 2003 draft. Don Durrett, Rogers' football coach at Saginaw High School, and Marshall Thomas, the school's athletic director, told MLive.com that Rogers died of liver failure. … Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Martinas Rankin could miss the rest of the year after hurting his right knee.
