Time for citizens to unite

-

Another hero lost

Regarding “Man charged in HPD officer’s death,” (Front page, Dec. 9): We lost another American hero, Sgt. Christopher Brewster. When will the American citizens wake up and put an end to this senseless rampage not only on our first responders but on us citizens? Just 78 years ago we entered not one but two major world wars and won them in a short four years. We were at that time united as being just American. Today it is all about white, black or Latino.

I don’t care what side you’re on with the impeachment issue, but I have never in my 86 years seen such divide in our Congress. This type of activity and language just divides us instead of uniting us.

I ask all you good law-abiding citizens to please step up and let’s correct what is wrong in this country. The next time you vote, I ask that you drive through a military cemetery and thank those that gave their lives and also those that served and were willing to give theirs. Remember, you can control the ballot box. James E. Muecke, Houston

Regarding “Details in fatal shooting of cop emerge,” (A3, Dec. 10): Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo has every right to express his dissatisfaction with the lack of gun control regulations and politicians such as Sens. John Cornyn and Ted Cruz who falsely claim they have been working vigorously to enact such legislation. It would not be difficult to enact gun control legislation if certain politicians were not overly concerned about receiving political campaign donations from the NRA. Kenneth Orr, Katy

The “Violence Against Women Act” probably does need to get passed, but for HPD Chief Acevado to paint the NRA as the “Big Bogeyman” is uninformed. The NRA does much to teach gun safety, and

I’m betting none of the people who commit these violent acts are NRA members. Bob Fowler, Point Blank

Life expectancy decline

Regarding “Matters of life, death,” (A14, Dec. 4): In your editorial, you state correctly that “America’s health care system is in desperate need of improvements.” If you haven’t yet, I encourage you to review as additional background material the nonpartisan HealthCare Summit Follow-up Report titled “Guiding Principles to Protect and Improve the Health Status of All Americans Follow-up Report” available online at http://thehealthcaresummit.org. This report, released in the spring of 2017, breaks down many fundamental problems with the current health delivery and insurance system, including problems relating to quality, access and cost. I served as one of the original and followup report editors. Kenneth Osgood MD, MPH, Las Vegas
