UIL tweaks enrollment cutoffs for 5A, 4A

- Adam Coleman

With new information and updated enrollment numbers, the University Interscholastic League released revised conference and division cutoff numbers Tuesday.

The new conference cutoff numbers, updated from last week’s figures, exclusively affect Class 5A and Class 4A.

As a result, several schools thought to be in one division for the 2020-2022 cycle last week are in another this week.

Waltrip in the Houston area is one school affected. With an enrollment of 1,919 students, Waltrip was thought to be moving up to Class 5A Division

I for football, but with the new cutoff numbers, it’s remaining in 5A Division II.

Class 5A Division I now features schools with an enrollment of 1,922-2,219 (from 1,900-2,219 last week).

Class 5A Division II’s new cutoff is 1,230-1,921 (from 1,210-1,899).

This is all in preparation for the biennial district realignment taking place Feb. 3, 2020. Which conference — and division for football only — schools land in determines which schools they are grouped with when districts realign.

The updated class cutoffs (previous numbers in parentheses): 6A, 2,220 and above; 5A, 1,230-2,219 (1,210-2,219); 4A, 515-1,229 (515-1,209); 3A, 230-514; 2A, 105-229; 1A: 104.9 and below.

The 40th annual UIL high school awards dinner features 10 finalists each for Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Coach of the Year from the Houston area’s public school division.

The Touchdown Club’s private school award winners last week were Episcopal’s Steve Leisz

(Coach of the Year), St. Thomas Paul Langemeier (specialist), Kinkaid’s Victor Garza (Iron Man), Second Baptist’s Dylan Cordell (lineman), Episcopal’s James Ogunrin (Defensive MVP) and Second Baptist’s Josh Johnson (Offensive MVP).

The Touchdown Club’s UIL awards dinner comes just before state semifinal weekend, with several finalists and coaches still in the postseason.
