Issues with relief checks

-

Still no money

We received a $1,200 check signed by Donald J. Trump for the estate of my dear mother who passed away over two years ago. My husband and I have yet to receive our checks. We have so much confidence in this administration’s handling of the pandemic crisis. (Uh, that is sarcasm, by the way). Sherry Andresen, Katy

Coronavirus section

Thank you, Houston Chronicle, for the daily coronavirus section. Staff writers provide excellent coverage, and through a news clipping service, we have the opportunity to read articles from other sources.

Saturday’s articles gleaned from the New York Times, Los Angleles Times and Tribune News Service added much to my knowledge of various facets of the crisis. Anna Louise Bruner, Houston

“Back on the court amid coronavirus” is a fascinating photograph. The background consists of two bold rectangles, one green and a smaller red one.

A vertical white stripe divides the rectangles. Each has a pattern of rectangles of varied sizes defined by white lines. And upon that background are dark shapes, tall and thin. Look carefully and we see that the shadowy shapes represent people. And below each shape, much smaller and blending into the background, one perceives actual people. The light is bright enough to make distinct sharp shadows and so low in the sky that the shadows totally dwarf the individuals so it’s the shadow people who seem real. The actual people insignificant nearly invisible unrelated objects.

It leaves me wondering where he had the camera, well above the court, it seems, and how he calculated the time when the sun was in position to create the perfect shadows.

The caption says the people were warming up for a game of pickleball Friday. Color, lines, shapes and shadows, so much to look at. Thank you for featuring the photo. Thank Jason Fochtman for composing and capturing it. Ann Isaacson, Porter

Texas vs. New York

Regarding “America shouldn’t play by N.Y. rules,” (A11, April 28): This opinion piece was ill-informed and irresponsible. What Texan would embrace a policy that starts with “Let’s play by N.Y. rules”? Lacking a cure or a vaccine, we were left with one weapon to deprive the virus of the one thing it absolutely requires to spread: human-to-human contact. We accepted isolation in the spirit of a social compact in order to protect not only ourselves but others as well. We have paid an enormous economic price, but we have succeeded in curbing the viral outbreak almost to the point where we can start opening up. To keep the virus in check we must do this in a controlled way, with adequate testing and contact tracing. We can achieve victory with a little more patience. We are almost there; let’s not throw away the results of our sacrifice with reckless behavior. William Madigan, Houston
