Eleven days after decommitting from Virginia Tech, two-time state champion North Shore quarterback Dematrius Davis verbally pledged to Auburn on Sunday.

Davis is a four-star recruit and ranked sixth among the nation’s dualthreat quarterbacks in the Class of 2021 by 247Sports.

“The coaches were recruiting me real hard,” Davis said of the flip to Auburn. “They were consistent. They told two QBs no for me, two QBs who tried to commit. They were serious about me. They had everything written up for me. They had a plan.”

Davis was the linchpin of Virginia Tech’s 2021 recruiting class, and the Hokies made inroads in the Houston area as a result. Shadow Creek defensive end Alec Bryant and Stafford defensive end Robert Wooten signed with Virginia Tech during the 2020 cycle, and Hightower receiver Latrell Neville is currently committed for the Class of 2021.

New Auburn offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Chad Morris, who has strong ties to Texas, made a difference. Morris had been recruiting Davis when he was the head coach at Arkansas. He also has head coaching stops at

SMU on the college level and Lake Travis, Stephenville, Bay City, Elysian Fields and Eustace in Texas high school football.

Davis already took an unofficial visit to Auburn. The Tigers extended an offer to the junior in January. Davis still considered Virginia Tech, as well as LSU and Texas A&M.

Davis is 37-2 as a starter. He completed 331 of 496 passes for 5,743 yards and 73 touchdowns and rushed for 1,592 yards and 27 TDs during Class 6A Division I title-winning seasons 2018 and 2019.

Davis’ most famous throw is the Hail Mary touchdown pass to A.J. Carter to defeat Duncanville as time expired in the 2018 state championship game.

“Just consistency,” Davis said of his plans for 2020. “Just keep doing what I’ve been doing. I’m not trying to do nothing extra, nothing less. Just keep doing what I’ve been doing.”
