Lone Star Flight Museum reopening

- By Emma Balter STAFF WRITER

The Lone Star Flight Museum, a center for all things aviation at Ellington Airport, will reopen Saturday, May 23, for Memorial Weekend. The museum had been closed since March 15 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“Because we are acutely aware of the financial burden this pandemic has caused, we invite the Houston community to come and enjoy the Lone Star Flight Museum and ‘pay what you can’ for admission,” said Lt. Gen. Doug Owens (U.S. Air Force Retired), museum president and CEO. The pricing offer is good through May 31.

The museum will open with limited experiences and with many safety precautions. The two hangars where the aircraft are kept, the Heritage Gallery, the Texas Aviation Hall of Fame, and the gift shop will be open to a limited number of visitors at one time. There will be no hands-on experiences or interactive screens, and all aircraft simulators will be unavailable, including in the Flight Academy, which will be open but only for the visual parts of the exhibit. The Aviation Learning Center will remain completely closed.

The museum can only allow visitors at 25 percent capacity. All visitors 11 years old and older must wear face masks. Publicfacing staff will have masks and gloves, as well as daily temperature screenings. Floor decals will guide visitors to follow appropriate social distancing.

On Saturday, young visitors will have the chance to pick up seeds for a home “victory garden.” During World War II, fresh produce from community gardens offered relief from public food supply rationing.

Note the museum’s new temporary hours: Tuesday to Saturday

10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. Usually closed on Mondays, it will be open on Memorial Day 10 a.m. to 5 p.m
