Lone Star Brewing releases new beer for the summer

- By Emma Balter STAFF WRITER

Lone Star Brewing announced the release of Rio Jade, a new Mexican-style lager that will be available across Texas starting through the end of summer. The brewery is also launching a partnership with Texas Humor to sell T-shirts whose proceeds will benefit Southern Smoke.

Rio Jade is the first seasonal beer for the brewery whose iconic red and white-clad original made its own “National Beer of Texas” marketing motto a kind of self-fulfilling prophecy. The new brew sports a turquoise look, designed by San Antonio artist Cruz Ortiz. It has 4.5% ABV and is made from Texas-grown ingredients, including malt from Greater Austinbased Blacklands Malt. The result is a crisp and refreshing style, with spice, floral and citrus notes.

Six-packs of Rio Jade will be sold for $7.99 across the state. The name translates from Spanish to River Jade, an ode to the waters and natural beauty of Texas and Mexico.

“We’re excited to launch the Rio Jade Mexican Style Lager as it gives us a chance to honor our heritage, but also celebrate the Texas of today,” said Lone Star brand director Emily Hoyle in a release. “The beer perfectly represents what we value at Lone Star: connecting to the land and people of Texas.”

Lone Star also became the latest brewery to raise funds for struggling service industry workers. The team partnered with clothing brand Texas Humor for its “Keep The Lights On Y’all” initiative, creating a T-shirt depicting neon lights such as the ones hung outside many bars and restaurants in the state. All of the profits from the T-shirts will benefit Southern Smoke, which is currently raising money for restaurant workers impacted by COVID-19 closures.

“The independent service industry members affected by this crisis are near and dear to our hearts,” said Lone Star brand manager Daniel Crawford. “They are a huge pillar of our community and the backbone of our brand. They spend their days providing amazing hospitality to us, and we wanted to share that back during these wild times.”

The Keep The Lights On Y’all tshirts are on sale now for $25 apiece on Texas Humor’s website, txhumor.com.
