Imagine

Regarding “Two knees, one issue,” (C1, May 31): The opinion of the Houston Chronicle bled over to sports this morning.

Traditionally, I look for the Houston Chronicle’s opinions to be clearly stated in the appropriate pages by the editorial board of the paper.

This is another prime example of news and opinion distribution being used for political gain by the Chronicle. The readership is confused and often takes opinion as the reporting of news because of the blurring of traditional lines in journalism.

I received the following verse from former proud Texan and retired USAF Col. Arthur C. Cole after I sent him an image of today’s Sports page:

Imagine ... if the city councils, the mayors and the police departments had actually done their jobs.

Imagine ... if our congressional representatives promoted furthering peace and prosperity in our a country rather than division and hate.

Imagine ... if we didn’t look to sports figures, social media and movie and rock stars as the arbiters of truth.

Imagine ... if America was still the light of the free world.

Imagine ... if the news media actually focused on the good rather than if it bleeds it leads.

Imagine. Daniel J. Lias, Richmond

I found your front page for the sports section highly offensive. Such statements and opinions belong on the editorial page and definitely not in sports. Tommy Martin, Spring

A Houston friend shared with me your George Floyd/Colin Kaepernick editorial on the front page of your sports section.

Thank you. If only every media outlet had your courage!

Please know your decision to run this has had a positive impact well beyond Houston.

Again, thank you. Gilah Pomeranz, Cedarville, Ohio

Thank you for printing the truth and your support of this truth on your sports page on May 31. The United States needs courageous journalism now, maybe more than ever. Thank you. Cindy Hovde, Sugar Land

Thank you to the person who posted the piece regarding George Floyd and Colin Kaepernick. It is powerful and heartbreakingly true. I saw it today on a Texan’s website. She was so happy that you did this. So am I. Thanks again and again. Lynne Stevens, Juneau, Alaska

Thank you for the first page of the sports section bravely saying that, had we listened to Colin Kaepernick, many lives would have been saved. Furthermore, there would now be peace instead of riots and more equity and hope for people of color and other poor people. Well done, Houston Chronicle. Sue Geller, Bryan
