Some TCU players sit out, saying Patterson used slur

FORT WORTH — TCU football coach Gary Patterson allegedly told a player to stop using the N-word in team meetings and, in doing so during a testy exchange at practice on Sunday, repeated the racial slur himself.

Linebacker Dylan Jordan described his version of the incident in a lengthy social media post, saying Patterson’s use of the N-word prompted a number of players to boycott Monday’s practice.

Jordan alleges that during Sunday’s practice Patterson allegedly said: “You’ve been saying (Nword) in the meeting room.” Jordan told teammates Patterson used the actual word.

Patterson and TCU have yet to respond to a request for comment.

Jordan said multiple players spoke with the coach about the incident before Monday’s practice and, once he confirmed Patterson repeated the slur as part of the discussion, several players refused to attend practice. In other college news:

• The Pac-12 responded to football players who have threaten to opt-out of the season because of concerns related to health and safety, racial injustice and economic rights with a letter touting the conference’s work in those areas and an invitation to meet this week. In the letter, Pac-12 commission­er Larry Scott said he was eager to discuss their concerns.

• Baylor guard Jared Butler, who averaged 16 points last season, will withdraw from the NBA draft and return to school for his junior year.

• SMU’s season-opening football game at Texas State scheduled for Sept. 5 will be moved to Aug. 29.
