Chapman powers A’s over D-Backs

OAKLAND, Calif. — Matt Chapman homered twice, and Matt Olson also connected to help Sean Manaea finally earn his first victory of 2020, and the slugging Oakland Athletics beat the Arizona Diamondbac­ks 5-1 on Thursday night.

Chapman hit a solo drive in the first and a two-run shot in the eighth. Olson added a two-run homer in the fourth for the AL-best A’s (18-8), who have their best record over 26 games since the 1990 club began 20-6. Oakland has an eight-game home winning streak.

PADRES 8, RANGERS 7 (10): Eric Hosmer hit a historic shot that made San Diego the first team in the majors to launch grand slams in four straight games, and the Padres needed an unearned run in the 10th for a wild win over visiting Texas. The Padres swept the four-game, home-and-home series, with a slam in each one.

BLUE JAYS SWEEP PHILLIES: Rowdy Tellez homered and hit a go-ahead two-run single in a seven-run sixth inning, and host Toronto rallied from a seven-run deficit to beat Philadelph­ia 9-8 and sweep a doublehead­er. In the opener, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. chopped a single over a drawn-in infield in the seventh to give Toronto a 3-2 win.

INDIANS 2, PIRATES 0: Unbeaten Shane Bieber racked up 11 more strikeouts, and Cleveland blanked host Pittsburgh to complete a three-game sweep and extend its winning streak to a season-high six games. Bieber (5-0) has struck out a major league-best 65 in 402⁄3 innings, an average of 14.4 per nine innings.

RAYS 10, YANKEES 5: Tampa Bay Rays completed its first sweep at Yankee Stadium in six years and took over first place in the AL East, getting a three-run homer from Mike Zunino in a victory over New York.

WHITE SOX 9, TIGERS 0: Lucas Giolito matched his career high of 13 strikeouts in seven dominant innings, and Chicago beat visiting Detroit to complete its first four-game sweep of the Tigers in 15 years.

DODGERS 6, MARINERS 1: Clayton Kershaw struck out a season-high 11 in seven strong innings, and Los Angeles defeated host Seattle.

TWINS 7, BREWERS 1: Jose Berrios pitched one-hit ball over six scoreless innings, Nelson Cruz hit a two-run homer, and Minnesota beat visiting Milwaukee.

RED SOX 7, ORIOLES 1: Nathan Eovaldi allowed five hits over seven innings, Xander Bogaerts and Mitch Moreland homered, and Boston extended host Baltimore’s skid to a season-high five games.

CARDINALS 5, REDS 4: Kolten Wong hit an RBI single, and host St. Louis scored three runs in the ninth inning to beat Cincinnati.

GIANTS 10, ANGELS 5: Wilmer Flores homered and drove in four runs, Brandon Crawford also went deep, and San Francisco rolled past visiting Los Angeles.
