Reid has goals, but winning is top priority
Texans safety Justin Reid saw the pass coming from quarterback Deshaun Watson, reacting in a hurry to disrupt the pass over the middle.
Reid yelled loudly in frustration when he was unable to come down with the interception. Hours later on social media, Reid wrote that it only increases his determination to capitalize on turnover opportunities.
Since making a full recovery from a torn labrum in his shoulder he suffered last season and undergoing offseason surgery, Reid hasn’t displayed any signs of the injury. He has regained his strength, range of motion and has delivered some aggressive hits without incident.
“Now it’s back to a point that it’s strong and stable and I’m comfortable and confident in it,” Reid said. “At this point, it’s just maintenance.”
Reid had 78 tackles, including 1½ for losses, two interceptions and a fumble recovery while playing in all but one game. He did so despite having his shoulder examined repeatedly by trainers after trudging off the field and then popping back into the game. He was voted the winner of the annual Ed Block Courage award by his teammates.
“He’s a tough guy,” Texans coach and general manager Bill O’Brien said. “To go out there and play that position with shoulder issues and come out of a game, have it worked on and then go back into a game, an NFL game, that just says a lot about Justin Reid. He’s a really valuable part of our team.”
Reid has set ambitious goals for this season that includes wanting to achieve All-Pro and Pro Bowl status for the first time. He doesn’t necessarily want to define his goals through statistics, though.
“I try not to have my goals stick to, per se: ‘I want three picks,’ ” Reid said. “The goal that I set for myself is: ‘I don’t want to drop any picks.’ Every opportunity I get the chance to put my hands on the ball, I want to catch every single one of them.
“Obviously, I have individual goals, being All-Pro, Pro Bowl and all of that, but more than that, it’s just a team goal. Winning in general, we want to do more than what we did last year. We want to start winning championships in Houston.”
