Houston oil company returns to Permian Basin

- By Sergio Chapa STAFF WRITER

Houston oil company Birch Resources has filed its first batch of oil well drilling permits since March.

The company plans to drill 10 horizontal wells targeting the Spraberry field in Howard County in the Permian Basin at depths from 7,000 to 8,100 feet.

Birch is known for naming its oil leases after college mascots and this batch of projects is no different.

Half of the wells will be developed on the company’s Sebastian The Ibis lease, named for the University of Miami mascot.

The other half will be drilled on the Vic The Demon lease, named for the horned mascot of Northwestern State University in Louisiana.
