Restriction rollbacks

Regarding “Abbott hints at rolling back restrictions,” (A1, Sept. 2): I believe that the governor should have ramped up the restrictions on COVID-19. Although new cases are falling, we should remember that every time we go out we make contact with many people. This may cause cases to go to back up. Although making this decision would cause a lot of anger in some people, we should do our best to protect the community.

Dr. Peter Hotez says that we are in a state of purgatory because hospitalizations have decreased but are still too high to go back to normal life. I don’t agree with not rolling back restrictions. We have to get back to our normal lives because living with so many restrictions is an unhealthy way to live. There should still be some restrictions until the case numbers are very low or there is a vaccine, but the virus is not deadly enough to risk hurting the community.

As much as I would like for restaurants to fully open back up and for businesses to start being able to earn as much money as they did before the virus, I think that rolling back restrictions will cause a resurgence of the virus and more problems in the future. I believe that the best possible plan is to stay tightly shut down with as few exceptions as possible to keep the virus from spreading until it is no longer a viable threat.
