Endorsements appreciated

Regarding “Here’s why we still endorse candidates,” (A14, Sept. 17): You described our situation exactly. “For many busy people, researching each candidate isn’t possible. Rather than turn to partisan slates, some with payto-play motivations, we offer an alternative: Informed candidate recommendations from nonpartisan journalists informed by facts.”

For years, my wife and I have printed out your recommendations and marked up our sample ballots to take to the polling place with us. We appreciate your recommendations.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for giving us your conclusions about the best candidates for various positions up for election. I like to be an informed voter, voting for the person, not the party. However, as you pointed out, it is hard to know who the candidates are in the less visible campaigns. I used to go to the library to get the League of Women Voters reports, but COVID-19 ruled out that option this year. This is a crucial community service this year.

Empty flights, lost jobs

I am an American Airlines flight attendant based in Texas, and I have been flying for over 13 years. This pandemic has been the worst crisis to hit the aviation industry in the history of commercial aviation. I have never seen flights so empty. Earlier this year, Congress passed the Payroll Support Program, and it has been a lifeline to our industry. I don’t think anyone expected this crisis to last as long as it has, and the PSP has helped to stabilize our industry and has given the airlines the ability to keep transporting mail and essential personnel where they are most needed. On Oct. 1, the PSP runs out, and thousands of aviation workers will lose both jobs and health care. I am one of those workers. My colleagues and I have shown up to work every day, even at the height of the pandemic and even as our friends and coworkers got ill, to make sure that first responders got to where they were most needed. We continue to do that today. Aviation is essential to a strong economy, including our local economies here in Texas. This is why Congress overwhelmingly supports an extension of the PSP. Congress and the White House must negotiate and pass a stimulus bill. Washington, do your job so that I can do mine! Americans will be ready to travel soon, but for this to happen aviation workers must be ready too.
