Astros (27-26) update: Houston’s magic number for clinching the AL West’s second playoff berth is three over both the Mariners and Angels. The Astros already have the tiebreaker over Seattle by virtue of their 6-1 mark coming into this series. They don’t own the tiebreaker over Los Angeles, which won six of 10 meetings. … Ryan Pressly has converted 11 of his last 12 save chances. He has a 1.50 ERA in that span with 17 strikeouts in 12 innings. … With hits in 17 of his last 18 games, George Springer has taken his average from .194 to .253. He is 24-for-72 (.333) with eight homers in that span.
Mariners (23-30) update: Seattle has the longest postseason drought among all MLB, NFL, NBA and NHL teams. Two losses in this series would eliminate the Mariners from the playoffs for the 19th consecutive year. … Gonzales ranks sixth in the majors with a 0.90 WHIP over 56 2⁄3 innings. ……Rookie of the year candidate Kyle Lewis has a team-best .280 batting average and 11 home runs but is slashing just .176/.295/.373 over his last 15 games. … Yoshihisa Hirano, who didn’t pitch this season until Aug. 22 because of a bout with COVID-19, has converted all three of his save opportunities.
