Supreme Court race begins
Nomination news
Regarding “Cornyn says no rush to fill court vacancy,” (A1, Sept. 22): On March 16, 2016, Sen. John Cornyn issued a statement on the subject of President Barack Obama’s nomination of Merrick Garland to fill a vacancy on the Supreme Court:
“At this critical juncture in our nation’s history, Texans and the American people deserve to have a say in the selection of the next lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court. The only way to empower the American people and ensure they have a voice is for the next president to make the nomination to fill the vacancy.”
As Texas voters prepare to make their selection for Senate in the coming election, Cornyn must show us if he is a man who stands by his words, who means what he says, who is honest and has integrity. Or is he an opportunist who will say and do anything to curry favor with Mitch McConnell?
The choice is yours, Cornyn. Show your true colors. And then we, the voters, shall make our choice. Anita W Darras, Houston
Regarding “Trump urges quick nomination,” (A1, Sept. 20): Let me get this straight.
If the current sitting president were a Democrat and a supreme opportunity landed on his lap to nominate a leftleaning justice to the U.S. Supreme Court just 40 days from a presidential election, would Sen. Chuck Schumer vehemently scream loudly for delaying the nomination and Senate confirmation until after the election? Really? Do you really think he would? The senator would seek a delay despite his fervent disdain for the current sitting president, a Republican?
If you believe that absurdity, I have, for sale, ocean front property in Montana I will let go at a cheap price. Mike Gonzales, Houston
