Active aging is key at The Buckingham

-

Every year in early October, Active AgingWeek celebrates the benefits of active living, regardless of age. It’s a spirit The Buckingham senior living community wholeheartedly embraces.

“We aren’t just active, but proactive through health and lifestyle education and preventive measures like flu shots,” said Shannon Schmidt, the community’s director of life enrichment. “As in past years, we’ve also partnered with Assured Imaging, a mobile digital lab, to offer bone density and mammogram screenings on campus in early November.”

The Buckingham’s wellness center and pool recently reopened for socially distanced exercise classes and water aerobics.

Schmidt said they’ve also incorporated more digital wellness opportunities, such as Amazing Place’s virtual brain-training programs.

“The last six months have really forced us to think about the type of programming we offer for residents,” she added. “Usually our schedule is very much in person, such as lectures in our theater or guest speakers. The pandemic has extended our comfort zone; we’re now hearing from residents we may not have normally reached, and technology has been an amazing tool for residents and staff to embrace.”
