HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Boys
Vernon Mosley III, Sterling
Notable: The senior was an all-purpose star in Sterling’s 46-14 win over Waltrip. He accumulated 413 total yards and five touchdowns on just 11 touches. The performance included six catches for 296 yards and four touchdowns and two punt returns for 96 yards and one touchdown. Moseley also plays cornerback.
What coach Kanavis McGhee said: “He has come into his own. He’s really taken the senior leadership role for us. Vernon has really stepped it up, not only with his performance but also with being vocal with the guys on the team.”
Other nominees Alberto Campa, Do-bie: Campo won the District 22-6A cross country championship in 15 minutes, 41 seconds, finishing just over a minute ahead of the second-place finisher.
Gavin Saacke, Tompkins: Saacke is the 19-6A cross country champion, winning one of the area’s toughest district races in 15:16.30. Teammate Ben Smith finished second at 15:38.
Randy Smith, Bridgeland: Smith led the way as Bridgeland had the District 16-6A cross country championships’ top three finishers. Smith won in 16:26.9 followed by Jacob Grosch (16:29.50) and Ethan Conville (16.34.10).
Girls
KennedyWade, Clear Falls
Notable: Clear Falls won a third consecutive district cross country crown by finishing with 24-6A’s top six runners. Wade finished first in 18 minutes, 51.37 seconds for her best time of the season over the 5,000-meter course. The Texas A&M commitment is also a track star in the 400- and 800meter runs.
What coach Abel Almendariz said: “Her and three seniors have led us in three consecutive district titles in cross country. But also academically, she’s in the top 5 percent in the class. She’ll sign with Texas A&M. She’s just a joy to coach day in and day out.”
Other nominees
Emily Ellis, Bridgeland: Ellis won the District 16-6A cross country title in 18:34.8. The Bridgeland girls had six of the top seven finishers and the school’s girls and boys swept the team titles.
Norma Gutierrez, Pasadena Memorial: Her time of 19:45.19 was good enough for first place at the District 22-6A cross country championships. Pasadena Memorial finished second as a team.
Maddy Hrncir, Needville: She had 12 kills on a 45.5 percent hitting percentage with three aces, nine digs and three assists in a bi-district playoff sweep of West Oso.
