Election battle continues
The final countdown
Regarding “Step up, senator,” (A13, Nov. 10): Why should Sen. John Cornyn have encouraged President Donald Trump to concede defeat just eight days after the election? He has a right to verify the vote count.
It took Al Gore 37 days to concede in the 2000 election.

I read with amusement your call for Sen. John Cornyn to use his voice to call on Donald Trump to concede. He’s a yes man. That isn’t going to change.
When he’s not beholden to Trump, he’s beholden to Sen. Mitch McConnell. McConnell wants to remain Senate majority leader and wants the two seats in Georgia. He’s also already working to delegitimize his “old friend” Presidentelect Joe Biden’s presidency. Cornyn and the Republican Party consistently put party before country.
The only thing that can be said for Cornyn is that while he is a disappointment, he is not the embarrassment that Sen. Ted Cruz is. Cruz is well into 2024 campaign mode with his over-the-top pandering to Trump’s base. This is what Texans voted for.

A passion for voting
Regarding “Rice player’s efforts work in getting students to polls,” (C1, Nov. 11): In reference to Jerome Solomon ’a article, my wife and I agree that Jacob Doddridge and his fellow students and teammates do deserve fireworks for their passion about voting. We were sixth in line at the Rice Stadium polling place, and after voting went to a local pie place to celebrate our early votes. Our only suggestion for the future is to let the Rice police know where free parking would be available for voting so they can share with voters. Great to read this story on the sports page.

Coronavirus
Regarding “Post-election rancor clouds relief,” (A3, Nov. 13): In the do-nothing House of Representatives and Senate, I would like to see leadership produce compromise solutions to legitimate issues. Make a headline that we can cheer for!

No traitors here
Regarding “GOP head derides likely next speaker,” (A3, Nov. 10): Republicans should fire Texas GOP Chairman Allen West for calling Rep. Dade Phelan a “political traitor.” Phelan had the gall to ask some Democrat representatives for their support in his bid to be Texas speaker of the House.
Phelan is to be commended for wanting to work with Democrats in the 2021 Texas legislative session. All legislators should work for the people not for any political party. We need to pull our country together.
Thumbs down to West.
