Small school playoffs pick up steam
The state’s Class 1A through 4A teams started the postseason Thursday with the state championships for the group set for Dec. 16-18 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
The Houston area has a few title contenders, such as El Campo, which defeated Yates in a 63-6 win on Friday in the bi-district round. El Campo touts two 1,200-yard rushers in Johntre Davis and Reuben Owens. Davis has three first-half rushing scores in the win.
Needville, from the same District 12-4A Division I as El Campo, defeated Furr in a 51-13 win.
Sealy handled Orangefield, 41-0 and Silsbee defeated La Marque, 50-6 in the 4A-II Region III bracket.

Saturday’s schedule features more playoff games, including Wheatley against Brazosport, North Forest meeting Stafford and Livingston against Tyler Chapel Hill.
Chapel Hill is led by former Crosby head coach Jeff Riordan. Livingston won its first outright district title since 1963 this season.
St. Thomas takes district crown

Figuring out Houston’s top team in the private school division is a tough task in 2020. Kinkaid (7-0) finished its season last week and John Cooper (5-0) finishes its season against St. John’s on Satur
day. Both Kinkaid and John Cooper compete in the SPC, where official championship are not being conducted in 2020.
St. Thomas hopes its season last even longer with TAPPS postseason success.

Shadow Creek defeated Pearland in a 20-6 win on Friday night in District 23-6A action.
There were injuries early on, mostly notably to Shadow Creek quarterback and Baylor commitment Kyron Drones. Last year’s Class 5A Division I state champions, now 6A competitors, also started 0-2.
The Sharks are winners of four straight since then, outscoring opponents 163-6 during the stretch.
Dawson, at 7-0, still awaits the Sharks in what could be a district title showdown in early December.
