FRANCISCO AVILES-ROIG M.D.

1943-2020

-

Francisco (“Paco” or “Frank”) Aviles-Roig, dedicated husband, father and psychiatrist, passed away peacefully on December 15, 2020, in Houston, Texas. Francisco was born June 16, 1943, in San German, Puerto Rico to Marciano Aviles and Carmen Maria Roig. He graduated from the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras, undergraduate in 1963, and from the School of Medicine in 1967. Following graduation in 1967, he married his beautiful classmate, Mariame Cofresí Aviles. They were married for 53 years.

Francisco moved to Texas in 1968 to serve as a physician in the U.S. Coast Guard, and he served one year in Vietnam as chief medical officer on a Coast Guard ship. After completing his military service, he moved to Houston and practiced medicine for fifty years. His passions included listening to Classical music, playing the flute, following Houston and Puerto Rico sports teams, and spending time with a close-knit group of friends and family. His attention to detail and incredible memory for obscure facts and trivia were legendary. Although he left his beloved island so long ago, he never lost his fondness for the culture and spirit of Puerto Rico, which he visited often. Francisco was a kind, noble, and generous soul who never expressed ill will toward anyone, which is why he was so beloved among friends and family.

Francisco was predeceased by his loving son Fran, and is survived by his siblings, Dido Aviles-Roig and Chano Aviles-Roig; his wife Mariame Cofresí Aviles; his children Marcos Aviles, Edward Aviles and Istra Bauza Aviles; his grandchildren Juliana and Nicolas; and many other beloved family and friends.
