Boys

Duke Lawniczak, Coldspring

Notable: Lawniczak averaged 32 points, 7.5 rebounds, six steals and 5.5 assists in two games to lead No. 12 Coldspring to victories over Onalaska and Trinity. His 32 points on Friday put him at 2,000 career points, which is second in school history. Coldspring is 14-1.

What coach Greg Devers said: “Duke has been a winner since he stepped onto the court. The Trojans have been 111-16 since his freshman year.”

Other nominees

Javon Jackson, C.E. King: Jackson scored a team-high 21 points as C.E. King upset previously undefeated Atascocita 67-64.

Kaleb Turner, Caney Creek: He led the Panthers with 22 points in a 54-51 double-overtime victory over Dayton, snapping a 12-game losing streak and avenging a two-point loss to Dayton earlier this month.

Ramon Walker, Shadow Creek: The University of Houston signee collected 23 points and eight rebounds as Shadow Creek won its sixth game in seven days with Friday’s 64-52 victory at Strake Jesuit.

Girls

Kailey Turner, Magnolia

Notable: The District 21-5A swimmer of the meet and University of New Mexico commitment won the 200 freestyle (1:54.38) and 100 butterfly (57.98). Turner also swam on the victorious 200 medley relay (1:49.85, with Sarah Culberson, Presley Heitzmann and Noelle Marsh) and 400 freestyle relay (3:40.70, with Sarah Culberson, Marsh and Claire Culberson). Magnolia, which placed second in the Class 5A state meet last year, won the district title.

What Turner said: “It feels really great, honestly. I feel like we’re going to do so good at regionals and state. I need to work a lot harder in practice and push myself during my races (at regionals).”

Other nominees

Kaeli White, Jordan: White won the 500 freestyle in 5:04:05 at the District 21-5A meet. She was second in the 100 backstroke. Jordan is Katy ISD’s newest school, opening in 2020.

Kaiya Wynn, Foster: The Tennessee commitment scored 26 points with eight rebounds and five steals and scored her 2,000th career point in a victory over Willowridg­e.

Gracelynn Alvarez, Heights: The UTEP commitment had 25 points and 10 rebounds in a victory over Lamar as Heights improved to 20-4 overall and 10-0 in district play.
