UH blasts TSU for series sweep

The University of Houston capped a three-game sweep of Texas Southern with a 14-4 victory at Schroeder Park on Sunday afternoon.

Steven Rivas (3-for-4) collected three of Houston’s 10 hits and reached base four times while Ian McMillan (1-for-4) struck a grand slam and accounted for five RBIs for the Cougars (3-0).

TEXAS A&M 15, XAVIER 0

Bryan Sturges went 3-for-5 and drove in a run and Mikey Hoehner drove in three runs as the Aggies blanked the Musketeers at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park in College Station.

Starter Jonathan Childress worked 42⁄3 scoreless innings, yielding three hits and four walks while fanning a career-high nine. Alex Magers (1-0) was awarded the win in relief, working a perfect 11⁄3 innings with two strikeouts.

Texas A&M improved to 1-2, while Xavier fell to 2-1.

RICE 9 HOUSTON BAPTIST 3

Cade Edwards went 4-for-4 with a home run, Braden Comeaux was 4-for-5 with 3 RBIs and Justin Dunlap homered as the Owls defeated the Huskies at Reckling Park.

Brandon Bena drove in two runs on two hits for HBU. Both teams are 1-1.

NO. 8 ARKANSAS 4 NO. 9 TEXAS 0

Brady Slavens hit a three-run home run and drove in four runs and three pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout as the Razorbacks beat the Longhorns at Globe Life Field in Arlington.

Caleb Bolden struck out seven in four hitless innings for Arkansas (2-0). Texas is 0-2.

BAYLOR 12-8

UT RIO GRANDE VALLEY 7-9

Jared McKenzie drove in four runs on four hits, Andy Thomas had five RBIs as the Bears routed the Vaqueros in the season opener for both teams at Edinburg.

In the nightcap, Spencer Serven drove in four runs and Andy Atwood had a three-run homer as the Vaqueros overcame an 8-0 deficit for the split.

Jacob Gonzalez keyed a five-run third inning with a two-run home run and the Rebels held off the Red Raiders at Globe Life Field in Arlington.

Gunnar Hoagland (1-0) struck out 11 in 51⁄3 innings for the win for the Rebels (2-0).

Nate Rombach drove in two runs for Texas Tech (0-2).
