Abbott should be praised

Mask mandate repeal

Regarding “A deadly pattern of failed leadership,” (A12, March 5): I completely disagree with your response about Gov. Greg Abbott getting rid of the COVID-19 restrictions. I feel like we have lived like this for long enough and we cannot allow ourselves to live in fear anymore. The way it has changed everything for over a year is ridiculous. I think that it was high time for this and am glad that Abbott made this change. He puts the power in the hands of the people, which is how all government should work. He made it so that people can return to their everyday lives if they choose. People can still wear a mask if they want to, but they are no longer forced. It was time for us to start to return to some form of normalcy and I am very happy that it has finally arrived. Abbott acted with the people in mind, whose lives could have been totally uprooted by COVID, and allowed them to get back to living their lives and start to get back on track.

Regarding “Biden blasts ‘Neanderthal thinking,’” A1, March 4): My husband and I have received both our vaccinations and were looking forward to going to a restaurant, but no longer! We are wary of being in a room with so many people, especially if they are not masked. We’ll stay home a few more months, thank you. It would have been far smarter to make vaccinations available to essential workers and keep the mask mandate!

What about the Ike Dike?

Since the brouhaha over the power and water outages seems to have taken second place to Gov. Greg Abbott’s removal of restrictions (by the way, brilliant political move), I sincerely doubt that anything will be done about the power and infrastructure issues. Case in point — what has happened to the Ike Dike and to changes in drainage due to Harvey? Mary Moore, Houston
