Lindsay added to backfield

- Aaron Wilson

The Texans are beefing up their offensive backfield.

The team agreed to a one-year contract with former Denver running back Phillip Lindsay, according to his agent, Mike McCartney.

The deal has a maximum value of $3.75 million, with a base value $3.25 million. That includes a $500,000 signing bonus and a $2.25 million base salary with $500,000 of it guaranteed. The deal includes a $250,000 incentive clause for 750 yards rushing-receiving and $250,000 more for 1,000 yards combined rushing-receiving.

It’s the latest move for Texans general manager Nick Caserio after previously restructuring running back David Johnson’s contract and adding former Ravens and Saints Pro Bowl running back Mark Ingram on a oneyear deal.

The Broncos allowed Lindsay to become an unrestricted free agent after they signed former Minnesota running back Mike Boone.

Lindsay rushed for 502 yards and one touchdown last season, averaging 4.3 yards per carry. For his career, he has rushed for 2,550 career yards and 17 touchdowns, averaging 4.8 yards per carry.

Quarterback acquired in trade

The Texans traded for Cincinnati quarterback Ryan Finley.

Houston picked up Finley and a seventhround draft pick from the Bengals in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick.

Finley’s addition gives the Texans three quarterbacks on the roster, including disgruntled and embattled quarterback Deshaun Watson, who has requested a trade, and Tyrod Taylor.

When rookie quarterback Joe Burrow tore his ACL last season, Finley replaced him and completed 3 of 10 passes for 30 yards with one interception and a zero passer rating in a loss to the Washington Football Team. He had 89 passing yards, one touchdown and 47 rushing yards, including a 23-yard rushing touchdown in a win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

For his career, Finley has completed 58 of 119 passes (48.7 percent) for 638 yards, three touchdowns and four interceptions and rushed for 143 yards and one score.

Former Eagles punter signs

The Texans signed former Philadelphia punter Cam Johnston toa three-year, $8 million contract, according to a league source not authorized to speak publicly.

Johnson replaces Bryan Anger, who was cut, shedding his $2.5 million salary.

Johnston receives a $1 million signing bonus and $3 million guaranteed.

For the past three seasons, he averaged 47 yards per punt. He had a 41.87 net average.

Toner reunites with line coach

The Texans are signing center-guard Cole Toner to a one-year contract, according to his agent, Joe Linta.

Toner previously played for Texans offensive line coach James Campen with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Toner played in 10 games with three starts last season.
